Interview

To the interviewElegant in a suit, legs crossed; with a hat, in profile; or with his dachshund Nicki in the garden at Wannsee: the photo collection of the renowned Berlin publishing house Ullstein contains dozens of portraits of the painter Max Liebermann (1847-1935) and his family. He was often portrayed during his lifetime and indeed recognized the value of these pictures for his careers as an artist. In this exhibition we present 16 Liebermann portraits from the Ullstein archive, by photographers including Erich Salomon, Felix Mann, Eva Riess and Cami Stone. While exploring how Liebermann was depicted in these images the exhibition also sets out to tell the stories of the photographers who captured them, many of whom – like both the Liebermann and Ullstein families – were forced into exile after 1933.
